Volt battery Pack consists of 3 cell group sections. Replacement sections will ship from GM warehouse at 30% SOC (state of charge). This Electronic Device is required when the Volt battery Pack is serviced internally to replace a bad section. The Tool can either charge the new section to match the SOC of the other 2 sections or discharge the new section to match the SOC of the 2 original sections. GM EngineeRing"s thought is to discharge reMaining 2 sections of a good Volt battery Pack at 5 amps to 30% SOC (reduce SOC 20% in two hours) to match the SOC of the replacement section, or optionally, charge the 30% SOC replacement section up to the level of the 2 reMaining sections. Device would need to measure section temp and reduce discharge rate or stop discharging if too hot, or if charging, reduce charge rate or stop charging if too hot. Tech would enter target SOC and Device would charge or discharge to the desired voltage. Worst case is having to discharge a 100% SOC section 3 (approx 170 volts) to 30% SOC , or having to charge section 3 from warehouse voltage of 50V up to 170V.
